Address for the Launch of “MIT Sloan Management Review Taiwan”
Chairman Wu, Publisher Gallagher, esteemed guests, good afternoon!
It is a great honor to be part of this ceremony and to express my respect and expectations for the MIT Sloan Management Review (SMR) and Publisher Gallagher.
My name is 吳統雄 (Sean TX Wu), a retired professor of management with experience in both Taiwan and the United States.
Three Major Waves in Western Management History
Today, I want to highlight three major waves that have shaped Western management history.
The first wave was led by Frederick Taylor, who introduced measurement and standardization as core principles of management. He also developed bureaucratic structures to enhance organizational efficiency.
The second wave emerged with Elton Mayo, who discovered the importance of humanistic factors such as mindset and motivation in the workplace.
Then came the third wave, initiated by Douglas McGregor, through his landmark work The Human Side of Enterprise, published in the Sloan Management Review—then called the Industrial Management Review.
This wave established two lasting contributions:
It defined SMR’s mission—to provide interdisciplinary insights and serve as a bridge between theory and practice.
More importantly, McGregor laid the final stabilizing stone of modern Western management foundations. His theories triggered disruptive transformations, reshaping global management practices. Some call this phenomenon "low-end manufacturing spin-off," while others refer to it as "industrial hollowing-out"—a shift that continues to reshape industries worldwide.
Today, President Trump challenges the consequences of this transformation, causing ripple effects across the global economy.
Publisher Gallagher, this is why I deeply respect SMR's enduring impact—yesterday, today, and tomorrow.
A Parallel in Chinese Management History
My friends, you may have noticed I have spoken of Western management history. Now, let us look at China's history.
2,400 years ago, Shang Yang, chancellor of the State of Qin, introduced theories remarkably similar to those of Frederick Taylor. He established measurement and standardization rules, reforming the bureaucratic system to enhance efficiency.
However, in English-language literature, these parallels and their practical applications are relatively uncommon to explore.
Two Expectations for SMR and Publisher Gallagher
Therefore, I offer two expectations for SMR and Publisher Gallagher:
Firstly, Building a Cross-Cultural Bridge: Since SMR is committed to fostering knowledge exchange, I hope that SMR Taiwan will actively facilitate cross-cultural discussions between American and Chinese management practices, philosophies, and solutions.
Secondly, Uniting Study with Action: Just as MIT emphasizes both science and technology, and SMR balances research with practice, we should strive for both study and action.
The challenges President Trump faces today have historical precedents in Chinese management, offering valuable reference frameworks for solutions. I urge SMR and Publisher Gallagher to assemble a team of American and Taiwanese scholars to develop actionable strategies for President Trump—and his special assistant, Elon Musk.
Interestingly, many historical Chinese solutions align with the public appeals made by both President Trump and Mr. Musk.
Ultimately, finding an agreement to resolve these issues depends on whether all parties are willing to make it happen.
MIT: Two Meanings, One Vision for Peace
The name MIT stands for Massachusetts Institute of Technology, but it also symbolizes "Made in Taiwan."
I hope that this dual meaning of MIT can inspire peace and prosperity for America, Taiwan, China, and the entire world.
I welcome your questions and comments after this ceremony.
Thank you!
