北京大學海洋研究院設立的「南海戰略態勢感知計劃」（SCSPI）持續在推特公布東亞美軍動態，從中可以發現美軍的偵察機7月頻繁在巴士海峽與台灣海峽出沒，甚至一再抵近廣東外海進行偵察，引發中國官媒《環球時報》頻頻表示不滿。中國軍事專家指出，美方是有計畫的搜集中國軍事資訊，如果雙方一但開戰，對中方來說「非常不利」。
《環球時報》日前引述SCSPI公布的美軍動態，強調美軍在7月6日到8日連續3天派出軍機對中國進行抵近偵察。包括6日1架RC-135偵察機、7日與8日各1架EP-3E電子偵察機，而且美軍進行偵查的距離一天比一天靠近，從6日7日的60.94浬、60.89浬，8日更是僅有51.68浬（約95.7公里）。
其實根據SCSPI公布的美軍軍機資料，今年7月3日就有一架EP-3E、一架KC-135R途經巴士海峽進入南海，另外一架P-8A更是在短短6小時內於巴士海峽上空來回飛行數趟，顯然是在進行情報偵蒐；7月4日美軍又出動3架P-8A經過巴士海峽進入南海空域；7月5日則有一架EP-3與一架EP-8A循同樣路徑進入南海。

7月6日起連續4天，美軍偵察機同樣天天經過巴士海峽上空，但最終的偵察地點則從南海改為廣東近海。直到7月10日，美國海軍的P-8A才將偵察地點再度改為南海東沙群島一帶。不過從7月13日開始，美軍偵察機再度將飛行軌跡貼近廣東領海基線外100公里左右，而且幾乎天天報到。直到今天（17日），仍有一架E-8C經巴士海峽抵近廣東近海約130公里處，一架E-3則在巴士海峽出沒，並未進入南海、台海或南海。
